From 1980 to 1995, a man named Allan Bridge operated a project called The Apology Line. It was an open forum where people could call him directly to get misdeeds and wrongdoings--however big or small--off of their chests. The project gained great acclaim over the course of its life until Allan's tragic, untimely death in 1995.
Allan was survived by his wife, Marissa Bridge. A few years after the death of her husband, Marissa met my dad, and soon after the two of them met, they were married. Since I was a very young child, Marissa has been a significant figure in my life.
As I got older, Marissa would tell me little bits and pieces about Allan. As time went by, I grew to understand the intense gravity of his work, and furthermore that all of his work for The Apology Line was conducted in the very apartment where I spent the formative years of my childhood (and the very same apartment where I still live today).
In recent years, Marissa and my dad have been working on a podcast, showcasing Allan's work and taking the listener through Marissa's life with Allan. The podcast launched recently and can be listened to on all streaming platforms. It is called, "The Apology Line".
As the podcast came to fruition, I became acutely aware of Allan's presence. His artwork lines the walls of my apartment, and at times his presence can be undeniably felt. He rears his head in the drafty, cold winter months as well as the swelteringly uncomfortable summers. Lately, as I delve deeper and deeper into my craft, I find that he is looking over my shoulder, observing my process and progress, perhaps listening to my practice sessions while reclining on the sofa in the next room over. I find his presence, however real or imagined, to be a source of great encouragement, and that he feels pleased that someone is continuing his legacy of creation in the very same space where he created his life's work.
